Verifying the identity in Cyprus

Verifying the identity of a client in Cyprus means actually looking at an original identifying document by the Lawyer (advocate) to ensure that clients and any third parties are who they say they are.

How to produce proof of your identity

If you are required to verify the identity of an organization or company, the Lawyer must also verify the identity of the individual giving instructions on behalf of the organization or company and the Lawyer must use reasonable efforts to obtain certain identifying information about the directors of the organization the Lawyer and certain shareholders.

To identify an organization (a company, corporation, partnership, fund, trust, association etc.) the Lawyer must obtain and keep a record of:
- the organization's full name;
- business address and telephone number;
- the organization's incorporation or business identification number and place of issuance of the number and the general nature of the organization's business; and
- the name, position and contact information of the individual giving instructions on behalf of the organization.
